Student Support

Starting piano lessons is an exciting step—whether you’re a parent enrolling your child or you’re learning for yourself. We know there’s a lot to organize! Purchasing a piano, getting the right music books, and finding a teacher who truly fits your goals. To help you get started, here are some helpful tips:

  • Your first piano lesson is all about getting comfortable and excited for the musical journey ahead. We’ll start by showing you how to sit correctly, position your hands, and familiarize you with the keys. Don’t worry if you’ve never read music before—this lesson is an introduction to the basics of note reading and rhythm.

You’ll also get to share your musical interests and goals, allowing your teacher to tailor future lessons to your needs. Most importantly, we aim to create a welcoming, encouraging environment where you can feel comfortably exploring and developing your artistry!

  • Having a proper instrument and practice space at home is key to your musical growth. We recommend purchasing an acoustic upright piano, however, a keyboard with weighted keys is also acceptable if space or budget constraints apply.

It’s equally important to establish a dedicated, distraction-free area for your practice sessions, ensuring you can focus on developing technique and musicianship.

  • Consistent practice is one of the most important keys to success on the piano. Aim to set aside regular, focused sessions—even if it’s just 10–15 minutes a day—to build muscle memory and steady progress. Treat practice time as a non-negotiable commitment. Over time, this consistency will turn into a solid and easy habit!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the payment structure work?

Lessons are charged at $70 per hour, with all tuition due by the 1st of each month. We accept credit/debit cards and offer the option for autopay. Please note that checks incur a $10 processing fee and cash is not accepted. You’ll receive an invoice about a week before payment is due, and you’ll be charged for your regularly scheduled lesson slots.

What if my payment is late or incomplete?

We understand that unexpected issues can arise. If you anticipate a delay, please contact us before the payment due date. Payments that are four or more days late may incur a $40 late fee. Continued late/missed payments could result in the suspension or termination of your lessons.

How do weekly lessons get scheduled?

We’ll agree on a consistent weekly lesson time that works for both you and the teacher. If you need to request a new time slot, contact our scheduling coordinator. We’ll do our best to accommodate changes, but if no suitable time is available, you can be placed on a waiting list until an opening arises.

What is the cancellation policy for absences?

Please notify us at least 48 hours before your lesson time if you need to cancel. You’ll be charged for the canceled lesson, but you’ll earn a “makeup credit” that can be used within 8 weeks. If you cancel with fewer than 48 hours’ notice, makeup credits are at the discretion of the scheduling coordinator and cannot be granted more than once per month.

What books or sheet music do I need to purchase?

After your first lesson, your piano teacher will provide you with a recommended list of method books and materials tailored to your goals and learning needs. You’re welcome to purchase them online or from a local music store.

Do I need an acoustic piano at home?

We strongly recommend having an acoustic piano for the best touch and sound. However, a full-sized digital keyboard with weighted keys can work if an acoustic piano isn’t feasible right now. We do suggest you upgrade to an acoustic piano or a high-quality digital instrument eventually for the most authentic playing experience.

Are there performance or recital opportunities?

Absolutely. We host recitals and other performance events throughout the year. These provide valuable experience for students to showcase their progress, build confidence, and celebrate their musical journey in front of family and friends.

Can parents sit in on lessons?

Yes! Especially for younger students, parental support can be incredibly valuable. If you choose to attend, we ask that you remain a quiet observer so your child can focus on instruction. Your involvement is a great way to understand how to support practice at home.

How long does it take to see progress, and how do I track it?

Every student learns at their own pace, but most will notice significant improvements after a few months of consistent practice and lessons. Our teachers provide regular feedback, set weekly goals, and give progress updates so parents and students can track growth over time.
